CD-Bundled Magazines
By Thiravudh Khoman

Update Notes: 24-Apr-2000

Two U.S. produced CD-magazines which I enjoy reading and would like to slip in here are: Maximum PC (http://www.maximumpc.com) and Maximum Linux (http://www.maximumlinux.com). Maximum PC is a wonderful magazine for people who build or at least "spec" their own computers, since it goes into depth into hardware systems and components, and does so in a "no-holds barred" style of writing. As such, it's probably not terribly suited for neophytes. As I mentioned elsewhere, a few past copies are available at Challenger (Ploenchit Center), but current copies aren't carried anywhere else. Subscribing seems to be the only alternative if you're interested in reading it. Or read bits and pieces of it off the web (beware of the annoying pop-ups).

Maximum Linux is essentially "Maximum PC for Linux", except that the focus is more on software (Linux, of course) than on hardware. Maximum Linux had a strange beginning. Its issue #1 came out in the 3rd quarter of last year and apparently had an overwhelming reception from the Linux community. But for reasons unknown, the magazine was unable to follow up with issue #2 until very recently. Unlike Maximum PC, Maximum Linux comes out only once every two months rather than monthly, and likewise, it's not available locally yet.

Naturally, both come bundled with CD's (so far at least).

There's another Thai CD-magazine that's worth mentioning, although it's hardly a monthly offering. LILO is a Thai computer magazine for Linux users. So far only two issues have been published, one undated but released last year and one dated October 1999, but released only this month. The first issue (figure 5) was bundled with RedHat Linux v5.2, while the October issue (figure 6) was bundled with RedHat v6.0 with Thai extensions. The cost of the CD/magazine bundle is 120 Baht.
