Avoid Real Email Addresses By Thiravudh Khoman Update Notes: 12-May-2000 I just received some feedback from Dr. Jeffrey Race after this article was printed in Post Database. The contents of the email are as follows: Dear Khun Thiravudh, Your letter caught my attention as it deals with spam, a subject I have been researching diligently ever since I started coding for a website and discovered that I can't put e-mail addresses on any technical datasheets because they will be vacuumed up by the spambots. So I have been working to develop procedures to eliminate spam and hope to write an article for publication (perhaps in the Atlantic or Harpers) about the interwoven technical, commercial and legal issues. As part of this quest I have composed an interim piece, a standard operating procedure (SOP) embodying what I consider a responsible anti-spam procedure and uploaded it to http://www.ptiiusa.com/extermin.txt. As I am still working on this project, I look forward to any comments you might have, but anyway I send it to you because the default recommendation (implicit in your letter) to "hit the delete key" just dumps the burden on others so I recommend it be abandoned in favor of a new procedure (such as I have developed) which may be more beneficial to the common interest. Kind regards, Dr. Jeffrey Race, President |
