Non-Printer Printer Drivers
By Thiravudh Khoman

Update Notes: 26-Apr-2000

In the main article, I stated that: "I'd be happier if Adobe were to create a cheaper, stripped down version [of Acrobat] which could only perform basic print saves." Well, I think I may have found what I asked for, although it's not made by Adobe. On IT.Soft's CD #33 is a trial version of DocuCom PDFWriter v4.0 by Zeon Corporation of Taiwan (http://www.zeon.com.tw). Unlike Adobe's full-blown Acrobat, DocuCom PDFWriter only writes PDF files as a "printer driver". The freeware version prints a "www.zeon.com.tw" watermark on every page, but otherwise functions normally. The registered version (without the watermark, of course), costs US$49.95, considerably less than Adobe's Acrobat. Zeon makes other PDF-related tools as well.

Update Notes: 17-Mar-2000

During a visit to Challenger IT SuperStore at Ploenchit Center today, I noticed that Adobe Acrobat 4.0 for both Windows and for the Mac was on sale for less than half of the US$249 list price I mentioned in the article - i.e. about 4,000 Baht (I forget the exact amount now, but will post it after I re-check). The catch is that this is an "academic price". If you're interested in buying this for some student (or some student is interested in buying for themselves or whoever), this is a pretty good deal.
